29 May: International Everest Day observed

 


The International Everest Day is observed every year on 29 May. The day is celebrated with processions, memorial events, and special events in Kathmandu, Nepal and the Everest region.



The day is observed every year in memory of the first summit of Mt. Everest on 29 May 1953 undertaken by Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa from Nepal who became first humans to achieve the feat. In 2008, the Nepal government decided to observe day as International Everest Day when legendary climber Hillary passed away.





  • It is the world’s highest mountain above sea level with Elevation of 8,848 m.
  • It is known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and as Chomolungma in Tibetan.
  • The mountain was named as ‘Everest’ as a tribute to Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.

October 21: Police Commemoration Day

The Police Commemoration Day is celebrated on October 21 every year. The day is observed to honor the martyrs who sacrifice their lives in this service to the nation.  This year, the day was observed to honor the police officers from across the country who have been working day and night to ensure  COVID-19 norms are followed properly. They are the frontline workers who  have been risking their lives in order to contain the spread of the virus. PM Modi’s birthday: Seva Saptah organised

  Every year, on Prime Minister Modi’s birthday that falls on September 17, Seva Diwas is celebrated. This year Seva Saptah has been organized to mark the PM’s 70 th  birthday. The Seva Saptah is observed between September 14, 2020 and September 20, 2020. Seva Saptah is also called a week of Seva. The Gujarat Government is to launch projects and schemes to commemorate birthday of the prime minister. The Chief Minister of Gujarat is to launch cow-based organic farming wherein the government is to provide a monthly assistance of Rs 900 to the farmers. Also, Gujarat Government is to provide kits to farmer to make Jivamrut (natural fertiliser). Also, water supply projects for 205 villages of Tapi and Narmada districts are to be launched.
